In the run-up to Easter and looking at Easter traditions in different countries we look at an Italian tradition, Columba.

In the UK there are many traditions but one of the most famous is Hot Cross Buns and Columba has a similar message.

Colomba is a traditional Italian Easter cake that is shaped like a dove (which is "colomba" in Italian). It is similar to panettone, a sweet bread that is popular during Christmas in Italy. Colomba is typically made with flour, sugar, eggs, butter, and yeast, and is flavored with candied orange peel and vanilla. The cake is often topped with almonds and sugar before baking, and is usually served as a dessert or a sweet snack during the Easter holiday season. Colomba is a symbol of peace and rebirth, and is often given as a gift during Easter celebrations.

Colomba is often to compared to panettone which is often served around Christmas time in Italy.

Christmas panettone is a traditional Italian sweet bread loaf that is typically enjoyed during the Christmas season. It is similar to regular panettone but often contains festive ingredients such as candied fruits, nuts, and spices that are associated with the holiday season.

Christmas panettone can be made with a variety of different ingredients, but some common additions include dried cranberries, cherries, and apricots, as well as almonds and pistachios. The dough may also be flavoured with warm spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

Like traditional panettone, Christmas panettone is typically served sliced with a hot drink such as coffee or tea. It can also be enjoyed with sweet spreads such as honey or jam, or used in desserts such as bread pudding or French toast.

Christmas panettone is a popular holiday treat in Italy and is enjoyed by many people around the world. It is often given as a gift during the holiday season, and many families have their own special recipe for making it.

Overall, panettone is a versatile bread that can be enjoyed in many ways. It is a beloved Italian tradition that has gained popularity around the world.
