As households across the world stocked up during the covid-19 pandemic, one of the go-to products was pasta. With many families at home, parents working and homeschooling children, the need to have something that would feed the family, quickly was essential. Advice for families from Family Action and UNICEF during the first lockdown in 2020 included pasta recommendations.

The popularity of pasta hasn’t just stopped as we’ve gradually come out of the pandemic, it’s still very much still a household staple. According to World Pasta Day and their 9 reasons why pasta keeps gaining popularity, these are some of the reasons pasta’s popularity is continuing to increase:

• In 20 years worldwide pasta production has almost doubled, increasing from 9.1 million tons to almost 17 million tons
• The number of countries consuming more than 1 kg of pasta per capita per year has almost doubled
• Since UNESCO said in 2010 that the “Mediterranean Diet is an Intangible Heritage of Humanity”, pasta has held a strong position of choice in healthy balanced diets
• Now that we have wholewheat, gluten-free, organic, fortified, legume flours, superfoods and ancient grains pasta, it’s now something that can be enjoyed by all.

World Pasta Day itself is a day of celebration across the globe but it’s only actually been in existence since 1995 where when 40 pasta producers from around the globe came together to hold the globe’s first World Pasta Congress. Now, the world comes together each October to pay tribute to one of the most delicious and versatile foods known to man.
