The ‘Flourish Fuelling Station’ has been launched by Sainsbury’s , it's an overnight drive-through offering shift workers free healthy food.

The pop-up drive-through – which is also open to walk-ups – will open today (25 January 2023), offering night shift workers free hot meals from its new Flourish health range.

This initiative was started after research by Sainsbury’s ahowed that shift workers have the unhealthiest diets in the UK, with 79% of them saying their unhealthy eating patterns are made worse by overnight working.

Other factors to blame include:

  • Lack of time to prepare meals in advance (29%),
  • Few facilities to prepare meals at work (29%).

As a result, they are relying on unhealthy snacks (29%), caffeine and sugar (26%) during working hours.

Sainsbury’s Flourish range has been developed alongside chefs and nutritionists, offering a positive approach to healthy eating.

The complete range features over 65 products, each packed with health benefits, with prices ranging from £1 to £4.

“It is a shame that night shift workers don’t have the same access to healthy, balanced meals as those working a regular 9 to 5, particularly as these eating habits are causing them to feel tired, whilst not keeping them full,” Sainsbury’s director of product and innovation Claire Hughes said.

“We hope that Sainsbury’s new Flourish range will help to address that, with the Fuelling Station offering the chance to try nutritious options for free.

“The range is all about delicious food with healthy ingredients that support a balanced diet. We hope it makes it easier not just for shift workers, but for everyone to find solutions for convenient healthy eating.”

The Flourish Fuelling Station will be open for three nights only; Wednesday 25, Thursday 26 and Friday 27 January from 5pm to 8am each day at the Sainsbury’s Petrol Station in London Colney, St Albans.
