Tesco’s CEO UK & ROI Jason Tarry has asked the grocery industry to pull together to fight the cost of living crisis. At the IGD conference which took place this week, Tarry said “If we were one business, imagine what we could do.”

This news was welcomed by others in the industry after Tesco which has been subject to criticism recently having had some high-profile spats between the business and its suppliers over prices and fees.

In the speech, Tarry praised the performance of the supermarket industry during the pandemic, where retailers and suppliers worked together. “We did some amazing work during the pandemic with a single focus,” he said.

Praise was given to the “brilliant work” the industry had done over the past few years in “building trust in our food supply chain”.

Now the cost of living crisis is an enormous challenge for the food industry. “The things that keep me awake at night are the cost of living and the cost of doing business.” said Tarry.

Food inflation remains at a record high of 19.1%, according to government figures, and food bank charities are reporting record demand.
